A Variety Of Nature Camps For Children 3 & Up

Since 1997, Fern Hollow Nature Center has been a valuable educational and environmental resource in Western Pennsylvania.  It is a place where individuals, groups and families can come to enjoy the outdoors and understand the environment.  Located in Sewickley Heights just off of Glen Mitchell Road, the center offers something for everyone, including:
-Beautifully maintained grounds 
-Hiking trails in our meadow
-The first certified Nature Play Area in Pennsylvania (and the 44th in the nation) by the Arbor Day Foundation 
-Environmental programs for local schools, scouts, families, and adults
-Hands-on Nature Themed Summer Camps
 -Wonderful community events
 
This year, Fern Hollow is happy to provide the following summer camps:

 
Seriously Fun Science – (Ages 9-11) June 15 – June 19; 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Break out your goggles and lab coats and get ready for some Seriously Fun Science!  This fun science camp for kids ages 9 to 11 will bring out the inner scientist in your child.  Campers will get to extract fruit DNA, try to protect an egg being dropped onto cement, and create their own musical instrument while spending their week enjoying the great outdoors.  With daily hikes and games along with a variety of experiments and problem solving, campers will get plenty of exercise for their bodies and their minds.
Tuition: $135 Members/$165 Non-Members
 
Hangin’ at the Hollow – (Ages 9-11) June 15 – June 19; 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Spend the afternoon with us as we enjoy some unstructured but supervised outdoor time. Stay disconnected from electronics, take hikes, play games and explore the beautiful grounds of Fern Hollow Nature Center. We may spend some time in the Outdoor Classroom, review books in our small library or play some games with friends. 
Tuition: $60
 
EcoWonder – (Ages 5-6) June 29 – July 1; 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
This half day mini-camp is designed to encourage our young naturalists learn, develop and celebrate their intuition, imagination and connection to nature. We will take daily hikes exploring and looking for the small things in our surroundings. We will also use our imagination to build homes for the fairy – folk that may live in our Outdoor Classroom. 
Tuition: $75 Members/$100 Non-Members
 
Wild Things (combined camp with Sweetwater Center for the Arts) at Fern Hollow Nature Center – (Ages 5-7) July 6 – 10; 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Full day camp! Visit Fern Hollow Nature Center for an exciting week of adventure as campers hike trails, view insects, and study nature. Learn how to look at the world through an explorer’s eyes. Campers will look for evidence of animal activity in nature during a daily hike then participate in a variety of hands-on experiments to learn more about the world around them.

This camp will be held at Fern Hollow Nature Center. ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS CAMP. Please call Sweetwater at 412-741-4405 to register. Fern Hollow will not take registration for this camp. The member tuition rate applies to both Sweetwater and Fern Hollow members.
Member Tuition: $265, Non-Member Tuition: $295
 
Nature Trekkers – (Ages 5-6) July 13 – July 17; 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Come enjoy a week full of nature and outdoor action. This half day nature camp includes hands on experiences for your child. Activities for the week may include examining live snakes, catching and observing insects and spiders in our meadow, getting up close and personal with some live birds of prey, or getting down and dirty with some creek critters. Each day will include a nature hike, educational study topic for the day, games and nature crafts. 
Tuition: $125 Members/$155 Non-Members

Nature’s Little Einsteins – (Ages 7-8) July 20 – July 24; 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Join us for a camp where we will investigate the natural world with week full of fun experiments, individual projects and engaging science learning.  We will explore, discover and enjoy the wonders of science in our own backyard.  We will get our hands dirty and perform safe and fun experiments with everyday household items.  Through age appropriate, hands-on experiments and activities, every camper will marvel at the surprises we have in store.
Tuition: $135 Members/$165 Non-Members

Bear Cub Adventure – (Ages 3-4) July 27-31; 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM
Preschool is the perfect time to introduce kids to the wonder and beauty of nature.  At this half-day camp your preschooler can join us for a fun week of outdoor play, nature games, crafts and exploration at Fern Hollow Nature Center.  Campers will hike through the meadow, explore the new nature play area, hunt for insects, do nature related arts and crafts and so much more.  We might even get down and dirty looking for earthworms!
Tuition: $125 Members/$155 Non-Members
 
Exploring Art and Nature (Combined camp with Sweetwater Center for the Arts) – (Ages 8-10) August 3 – August 7; 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Full day camp! Visit Fern Hollow Nature Center for an exciting week of adventures as campers hike trails, view insects, and study nature. Learn how to look at the world through a scientist’s eyes. Campers will look for examples of science in nature during a daily hike then participate in a variety of hands-on experiments to learn more about the world around them. Students will learn about different areas of science, including physics, chemistry, and physiology.

This camp will be held at Fern Hollow Nature Center. ONLINE REGISTRATION IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS CAMP. Please call Sweetwater at 412-741-4405 to register. Fern Hollow will not take registration for this camp. The member tuition rate applies to both Sweetwater and Fern Hollow members.

In addition to our wonder summer camps, Fern Hollow also offer:
Free playdates for children 3-10 years in our Natural Outdoor Classroom every Wednesday during the summer (weather permitting) from 11:00-1:00pm.  Located in our White Pine Forest the classroom offers children an opportunity for an afternoon of discovery, challenges, building, & creative play.   
Monthly family fishing programs with our certified fishing instructor on a privately stocked lake (everyone catches something).  Fern Hollow provides the equipment, bait, and will even help with removing your fish.
Monthly family programs that gives families a chance to enjoy the outdoor and quality family time.  Programs scheduled for this summer include a program on fireflies, camp fires, storytelling, and so much more.  
The center will also offer wonderful community events.  On the schedule for this summer is Blues and Brews on July 11th, The Italian Garden Dinner on August 21st (voted one of the top ten parties in Pittsburgh by the Tribune Review) and our most popular event every year- the Fall Music Festival on September 19th.
