All children are different. Some walk at 9 months. Some talk at 15 months. But, as a parent, it’s always a good idea to know where your kids are when it comes to developmental milestones. If they haven’t achieved a skill yet, there are services to help them reach their full potential.
Here’s a list of 10 skills a two-year-old should be doing:
1. Walks up and down steps with support, like holding someone’s hand or using a handrail
2. Stacks at least four blocks on their own without the tower falling right away
3. Says between 50 to 100 words and simple phrases, like “more eat”
4. Starts doing some pretend play, like feeding a baby doll or crashing cars
5. Uses gestures, like waving to people and pointing to pictures in books
6. Follows two-step directions, like “get your shoes and bring them here”
7. Looks at faces and reacts when someone is upset or happy
8. Knows familiar body parts, like nose, eyes, and feet
9. Uses utensils to eat (They can still be messy!)
10. Plays with a toy or does an activity for 4-6 minutes
If you have concerns about your toddler’s skills, Early Intervention can help. It’s a free program and starts with an evaluation in your home. A team will determine if your child qualifies, and Pediatric Therapy Professionals is one of the agencies you can choose to help your family. PTP offers services like speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Sessions are usually an hour a week and focus on strategies you can use to support your child’s development.
