Elisabeth Bennington – “I want to help women and children who are struggling.”

Elisabeth, you recently opened your own law firm, Bennington Law Firm, LLC.   Tell us more about the reason you stepped out on your own this past year.

Bennington Law Firm, LLC is dedicated to the litigation areas of divorce, custody, support, and protection from abuse as well as to the drafting of prenuptial agreements and property settlement agreements.  I decided to establish by own law firm after 15 years of practice, to focus my work exclusively on my clients rather than day to day firm management issues.

Why did you choose to do what you do?

There are many reasons that I practice family law but I tend to think that my education played a large role in my decision to practice family law. I am  a 1993 graduate of Winchester Thurston which was the last class to graduate all-girls.  I was also a 1997 graduate of Chatham College, which also has now become co-educational.  Being educated in an all-girls environment truly solidified my desire to help women and children who were struggling.

What do you love about having your own business?

The knowledge that I have built a career and am able to sustain a firm dedicated to helping people in family crisis.

What would be the ONE PIECE of advice you'd share with women or moms considering opening their own business in some way?

Go for it! You will have wished you did it years ago!

What was your biggest challenge?

Finding the right space.  I knew I wanted to stay in Shadyside and the East End is so popular right now, it was a challenge to find a comfortable yet elite space in the right price range.

Did you ever want to quit, throw in the towel!?  What kept you going?

Never! But if I get tired, like most of us, I think about my daughter Emma and what it means for me to be her role model as a lawyer and mother.
