Call Me Crazy Cookie Lady: She Makes Cash With Custom Cookies

A Local Pittsburgh Mom Who Made Her Own Business Happen: Jamie Wadowsky + $5 Off!

February 24, 2016

Tell Us about your business and why you created it.

Jamie Wadowsky, the owner and cookie artist at Call Me Crazy Cookie Lady, believes that cookies are tiny works of delicious art.

Jamie dabbles in a lot of different artistic mediums, but found a true passion in 2014 when she discovered cookie decorating.  What started as a hobby, quickly blossomed into a business that allows for the perfect marriage of technical skill, artistic expression, and visible affection.  The time, care, and love that goes into each beautifully, delicious bite is what she believes makes giving and receiving her Call Me Crazy Cookies Lady cookies so special.

Jamie currently takes custom cookie orders and teaches cookie decorating.  Her work has been featured on The Voice with winner Sawyer Fredrick, KDKA Pittsburgh Today Live , Cookie Connection with Julia Usher, and Rosewood Boutique lookbook/magazine as well as numerous websites and blogs.

When Jamie isn't making cookies or teaching cookie art classes, she can be found chasing around her 4 cookie crumbs and husband.

What do you love about having your own business?

As a mom with 4 young children and no family in the area, I love being able to make my own schedule. I am able to go on field trips, volunteer, attend all softball and baseball games and be mom!

Tell us about your background/ education!

I actually was a kindergarten teacher for 15 years. I loved creating all the lesson plans and activities. I never used a lesson book. I always created everything myself. I have an early childhood degree and an elementary degree as well as a masters in Reading Support.

What would be the ONE PIECE of advice you'd share with women or moms considering opening their own business in some way?

One Piece of advice- make sure your husband or spouse is on board with you. Whatever you do you, it will take over all aspects of your life and even your house. You need to have a good support system who will help you when you get busy or need someone to make dinner. It is difficult to juggle family and business.

What was your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is knowing when to take a break. Being a one woman business owner is difficult. There is so much to do and I feel like it never ends. There is always emails, to advertising, or invoicing. I find I have a difficult time shutting off the cookier in me. I will find myself working 16 hours a day 7 days a week. I need to set better hours and stick to them.

Did you ever want to quit, throw in the towel!?  What kept you going?

Of course…. Holidays are very hard. I have gone several days without sleep just to complete orders. I often feel like I am missing out on my family’s holiday traditions and that does make me sad. I keep going because I do love creating new designs and learning new techniques that I can use to create art on cookies.
